Meet the Committee
Sustainable Arnside has a Committee of five members, elected annually at our AGM from the membership. Below is some information about who we are and our motivation to address climate change and other environmental issues at a local level. If you are interested in joining us and contribute in any way we would be delighted to hear from you.
Paul Bates, Chairman
I am a retired Professor of Biomedicine at Lancaster University. I have been a lifelong fellwalker and always interested in nature and the environment. Human driven climate change is the greatest challenge of our time that could profoundly alter the planet for future generations. I want to do my bit to reverse the damage we have done.
Helen Thompson, Secretary
I am a retired secondary school teacher. I have lived in the Arnside/Silverdale area since 1985 and brought my children up here. My interests are the climate, art (continually trying to improve my skills), gardening and family. I believe that anyone who is considering the future, for themselves, their grandchildren or for society generally, must put climate change at the top of their list of priorities. It’s a no brainer.
Rachel Dutfield, Treasurer
I have lived in Arnside for 27 years. Now retired I was a marketing manager and worked for a domestic heating manufacturer. I joined Sustainable Arnside because I am part of the most profligate generation but I want a better future for my children and grandchildren.

Arnside is the place that Dave and I chose to settle in and bring up our four daughters over 20 years ago. We have always felt fortunate to be able to have this choice to live in a beautiful place with such an active local community. I worked for 30 years in local government in Public Heath, Health Improvement and Environmental Projects. In 2024 I helped set up Arnside Repair cafe, which has been very well supported by local volunteers and residents.
